About Mid-American Goaltending
Mid-American Goaltending was founded with the purpose of increasing the availability of premier goalie training in the Greater Cincinnati area through a variety of training opportunities. We serve to help goaltenders develop foundational and advanced skills through habit based learning. Mid-Am Goaltending also firmly believes that educating coaches and goalie families is crucial to building a network of support around individual athletes.
Owner and Director: Matthew Michno
Matthew Michno returns to Ohio with a wealth of knowledge from the wide variety of hockey experience gained over about a decade coaching on the East Coast. He has a proven track record of helping goalies of any age and skill level develop their work ethic, habits and passion for the game leading to success on and off the ice.
During his time as Director of Coaching at Pro Crease Goaltending, Matt was mentored by Tampa Bay Lightning Goaltending Scout, Jared Waimon. This position but him in the middle of the youth hockey action in Connecticut working with organizations such as Mid-Fairfield Youth Hockey, Central Connecticut Youth Hockey and many more. Matt worked closely with the goaltenders of premier Prep Schools including NEPSAC Championship teams at Salisbury, Avon Old Farms, Loomis Chaffee and the Frederick Gunn School. At Pro Crease, Matt helped organize and run a full slate of high end summer camps for goalies of all ages and skill levels including collegiate and professionals. Matt was fortunate work with many great families and athletes over these years. It was rewarding for him to see goalies grow from their introduction to the position to the competitive heights of juniors, prep school, college and the pros.
In addition to this position, he also worked with NCAA Men’s Div I/III programs including Cornell, Brown, UConn and Connecticut College. In these roles, Matt was responsible for aiding the development of NHL Draft Picks Adam Huska (NYR) and Tomas Vomacka (NSH) in addition to NTDP and NCAA record holder Andy Iles. These roles gave great perspective for what it takes to achieve the highest level of the scholastic game and shape the training methodologies used today at Mid-Am Goaltending
Michno has also been in involved in USA Hockey’s development process since 2014 with the National and District level evaluation camps. At these programs, 15, 16 and 17 year olds compete to form a national team for the Hlinka/Gretzky and 5-Nations Tournaments. He served as the GDC for the State of Connecticut providing USA Hockey’s coaching education programming to youth hockey coaches to promote goalie development.
Matt is from Kettering, Ohio and played his youth hockey for the Dayton Gems, Bombers and Bluehawks organizations before playing at the Club Varsity level at Centerville. He won a CSCHL tournament championship at Ohio University for the ACHA DI team while obtaining his Master’s in Coaching Education.
